OMSI to attempt to build world's largest baking-soda-and-vinegar volcano

The world's largest volcanic eruption could soon be coming to Portland — a baking soda and vinegar eruption, that is.

The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry is aiming to build, and then ignite, the homemade volcano this weekend.

The super-sized version of the classic science fair experiment will be 34-feet tall and was conceived as part of OMSI's newest exhibit "Pompei." If all goes according to plan, OMSI will break the existing Guinness World Record (a volcano 28 feet and 3.3 inches tall made with the same ingredients).

Construction for the volcano began July 12 in the OMSI front plaza.

The eruption is scheduled for 3 p.m. July 23, with activities starting at 11 a.m. leading up to the explosion.
