Volcanoes beat Jaguars

St John’s, Antigua:

The Windward Volcanoes saw off the Guyana Jaguars with a 53-run victory in semi-final action of the Cricket West Indies Regional Super50 Cup at the Coolidge Cricket Ground here Thursday night.

After being sent in to bat by the Jaguars, who won the coin toss, Tyrone Theophile produced a brilliant knock of 107 runs, with nine fours and four sixes off 104 balls. He and Kavem Hodge, who made 57, with four fours, off 65 balls helped take the Volcanoes to 283/7 off their 50 overs.

Jamaican Ramaal Lewis took three for 54 in the innings for the Jaguars.

With a target of 284 to win, the Jaguars batting attack fell apart early on as openers Chandrapaul Hemraj and Tagenarine Chanderpaul went for 4 and 12 respectively. Shefane Rutherford top scored with 49 off 53 balls, with four fours and one six and Veerasammy Paul added 37 from 47 balls while veteran Shivnarine Chanderpaul produced 34 from 38. However, it was not enough as the Jaguars were bowled out for 231 with Hodge claiming three wickets for 49 runs for the Volcanoes, to take the man of the match award. His teammate Larry Edwards also took two for 37 runs.

The Volcanoes will now meet the Barbados Pride, who started the competition with them in Group A, in Saturday’s final at the same venue, which bowls off at 2 p.m. local time (1 p.m. in Jamaica).
