Vanuatu's opposition leader criticises the government response to Ambae's erupting volcano(Bindi Bryce)

The Vanuatu Opposition leader is among those asking for answers from the government as the Manaro Volcano continues to make life on Ambae Island untenable for many hundreds, if not thousands, of people.

Ishmael Kalsakau says the latest emergency has been building for weeks and people are getting anxious and frustrated.

Local disaster authorities are on high alert, and international NGO's are preparing to provide support after alarming reports emerged of Ambae people suffering from serious health problems from the heavy ashfall and acid rain.

The Government ordered a mass evacuation from Ambae in last September but the dilemma facing authorities is much more difficult now, because the volcano is unpredictable and there is a growing sense that the islands need to be relocated permanently.

"It's been a shambles right from the beginning the way the government's been treating this issue on Ambae," Mr Kalsakau said.

"They evacuated people then when there wasn't a proper assessment done by qualified vulcanologists to assess the damage and determine when or where the people should evacuate".

"The government's been quite slow to react to this all of this, they've got to do things right by the people, they've got to locate land on another island, not just put up makeshift places...it's got be more serious, more organised," he said.

Pacific Beat has made requests to the Vanuatu government, the police and the National Disaster Management Office to clarify what is happening, but are yet to receive a response.
