San Francisco man dies from Hawaii mountain bike crash injuries

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii - A 53-year-old San Francisco man who fell while mountain biking on the Big Island has died from his injuries.

West Hawaii Today reports that the man and his wife were riding an off-road trail on Thursday around the Mauna Kea volcano when he fell.

Hawaii Fire Department Battalion Chief John Whitman said an off-duty firefighter and bystanders who came across the scene performed life-saving procedures until a rescue crew arrived by way of helicopter.

The man was flown to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The fire department said the man was wearing a helmet when he fell.
