High school student paralyzed from the neck down after wrestling match
A high school sophomore in California has been left paralyzed from the neck down and unable to breathe on his own after being injured during a wrestling match. KRON reports 16-year-old Ryan Joseph, a student at College Park High School in Pleasant Hill, suffered a C4 spinal cord injury last Wednesday. Adam Samhan, one of Joseph's friends, described the horrific scene. "The guy took him down and put him in a hold, and then the ref shook him off and he shook his head like, 'I can't get up' so he just laid there and the ambulance had to come and take him," he told KGO. A GoFundMe page has been created to help his family pay for medical expenses. "Currently Ryan is paralyzed from the neck down and unable to breathe on his own. Hopes and prayers are for Ryan to have a speedy recovery and one day regain mobility for independent living," the GoFundMe page reads. In addition to wrestling, Joseph also plays lacrosse. Loved ones say he is beloved in the community. "Ryan is well-known by friends, teachers and coaches for his charm, exceptional wit and humor. His family gives heartfelt thanks for the kindness and support they have received from the many communities Ryan has touched at College Park High School, Pleasant Hill Middle School, and Pleasant Hill Elementary. Special thanks to his beloved wrestling and lacrosse teams," the GoFundMe page reads. As of Wednesday morning, $64,000 had been donated to help in the teen's recovery.
