Politicians offer swift, sharp reactions to Trump’s comments on Putin, election
Reactions to President Donald Trump’s remarks at a news conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin were swift and striking from both sides of the political sphere. Many saw the news conference as an opportunity to openly agree with the U.S. intelligence officials who have determined that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election. Several politicians took to social media to declare their displeasure at the president seeming to dismiss what intelligence officials have been confirming for months. Last week, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein announced indictments for 12 Russian military intelligence officials on accusations they hacked into the Democratic National Convention servers before the 2016 election. When asked specifically if he would address the recent indictments of Russian officials with Putin and condemn the actions that allowed the interface into the election, he simply said Putin denied those actions."I have real confidence in my intelligence people, but I must tell you that President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial," Trump said.During the press conference, Putin chimed in as well saying that it was “nonsense” that Russian would have interfered in the United States election. He admitted he wanted Trump to win but never instructed or allowed anyone to cause a disruption in the process. That didn’t stop politicians from going public with their statements, however. Paul Ryan, Speaker of the House “There is no question that Russia interfered in our election and continues to undermine the democracy here and around the world. That is not just the finding of the American intelligence community but also the House Committee on Intelligence. The president must appreciate that Russia is not our ally. There is no moral equivalence between the United States and Russia, which remains hostile to our more basic values and ideals. The United States must be focused on holding Russia accountable and putting an end to its vile attacks on democracy.”Marco Rubio, Florida senator “Foreign policy must be based on reality, not hyperbole or wishful thinking. And the reality is #Russia is an adversary. Because #Putin doesn’t believe in win/win scenarios & thinks only way to make Russia stronger is to make U.S. weaker. Any approach not based on this will fail.”Trey Gowdy, South Carolina representative for 4th District"Russia is not our friend. Russia attempted to undermine the fundamentals of our democracy, impugn the reliability of the 2016 election...it is possible to conclude Russia interfered with our election in 2016 without delegitimizing electoral success."John McCain, Arizona senator"Today’s press conference in #Helsinki was one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory. My full statement on the #HelsinkiSummit."Adam Kinzinger, Illinois representative for the 16th District "The American people deserve the truth, & to disregard the legitimacy of our intelligence officials is a disservice to the men & women who serve this country. It's time to wake up & face reality. #Putin is not our friend; he's an enemy to our freedom."Lindsey Graham, South Carolina senator “Missed opportunity by President Trump to firmly hold Russia accountable for 2016 meddling and deliver a strong warning regarding future elections. This answer by President Trump will be seen by Russia as a sign of weakness and create far more problems than it solves. (1/3)“It is imperative that Congress hold hearings on the extent and scope of any cooperation with Russia in Syria regarding Iran’s presence.“Finally, if it were me, I’d check the soccer ball for listening devices and never allow it in the White House.”Abby Huntsman, Fox News anchor, daughter of U.S. Ambassador to Russia Jon Huntsman Jr. “No negotiation is worth throwing your own people and country under the bus.”Ben Sasse, Nebraska senator “This is bizarre and flat-out wrong. The United States is not to blame. America wants a good relationship with the Russian people but Vladmir Putin and his thugs are responsible for Soviet-style aggression. When the president plays these moral equivalence games, he gives Putin a propaganda win he desperately needs.”Jeff Flake, Arizona senator “I never thought I would see the day when our American President would stand on the stage with the Russian President and place blame on the United States for Russian aggression. This is shameful.”Michael Steele, former Republican National Convention chairman"'The Russian State has never interfered and will never interfere in American internal politics’--Putin ‘Our relationship has never been worse than it is now, but that changed as of about four hours ago.’ ‘I hold both countries responsible. I think we’re all to blame’—Trump.” Joe Walsh, former congressman“What you saw today was ‘collusion’ on the world stage.”"Trump was a traitor today. I cannot & will not support a traitor. No decent American should."I've always tried to balance my personal distaste for Trump with my support for much of the agenda. The good Trump/bad Trump thing. After 2day, that dance is over. The bad Trump now clearly outweighs any policy benefits. He is a danger to this country. I can't straddle anymore."Orrin Hatch, Utah senator “Russia interfered in the 2016 election. Our nation’s top intelligence agencies all agree on that point. From the President on down, we must do everything in our power to protect our democracy by securing future elections from foreign influence and interference, regardless of what Vladimir Putin or any other Russian operative says. I trust the good work of our intelligence and law enforcement personnel who have sworn to protect the United States of America from enemies foreign and domestic.”Bernie Sanders, Vermont senator “President Trump’s press conference with Putin was an embarrassing spectacle. Rather than make clear that interference in our elections is unacceptable, Trump instead accepted Putin’s denials and cast doubt on the conclusions of our intelligence community. This is not normal.”Tim Kaine, Virginia senator “This is a sad, shameful moment for our great nation. We will reclaim our values and reassert our global leadership. We'll turn the page on this dark chapter. But it won't happen on its own. We all must stand up—to side with U.S. law enforcement and to protect all Americans.”John Kasich, Ohio governor “We need to be clear. Russia is our foe. Putin is actively trying to hurt our country. America needs to speak with one voice AGAINST Russia.”Dan Rather, journalist “American journalists have shown more bravery and honesty in questioning Putin about the Russian attack on American sovereignty than the President of the United States."
